Veve – Are NFTs worth it?

In December 2021, I decided to take a look at what all the fuss was about with these comic NFTs, when it was announced that the VeVe application were ‘dropping’ licensed Marvel comics.

I had first become aware of VeVe through TikTok. I had come across videos of users of the app attempting to win comic book drops. These videos made it seem almost impossible to win one of these drops – in fact, the videos showed the comics being sold out within seconds of them becoming available for sale.

Despite the TikTok videos, I decided to install the app on my phone to take a look. My curiosity was piqued, I must admit. I do enjoy the feeling of attempting to win something. But was it really impossible?

If being a comic collector and reader for 25 years has taught me anything, it’s that nothing is impossible right? The app seemed simple enough to me, it had a nice layout and seemed user-friendly. Simple enough that you buy gems as currency to purchase NFT collectables such as statues and comics. Basically, it used its own digital currency.

I looked through the comics listed in the marketplace and saw comics for sale in the thousands. So what was I missing out on exactly? It seems like these drops are every week with an average of 30,000 being available. Some of the 30,000 allocated were issued with variant covers in a smaller ‘print’ run, acting as uncommon, rare and secret rare.

It’s apparent that the secret rare issues were the highly sought comics, as there tended to be less than 1000 in circulation.

It seemed to me that if you were in fact lucky enough to win a drop and were to obtain a secret rare, you should also put a lottery ticket on as well…
